Which over-the-counter medications be used during pregnancy to treat acne?
Per ACOG, Over-the-counter (OTC) products containing the following ingredients can be used during pregnancy: Topical benzoyl peroxide, Azelaic acid, salicylic acid and Glycolic acid.
What about Retinol/ Topical retinoids??
These medications are a form of vitamin A and are in the same drug family as isotretinoin. Unlike isotretinoin, topical retinoids are applied to the skin, and the amount of medication absorbed by the body is low. But it is generally recommended that use of these medications be avoided during pregnancy. Some retinoids are available by prescription. Other retinoids can be found in some OTC products.
